It looks like a kitchen table...with something odd on it. Is it made of metal?

Is it something for holding the lids on jars?
I rekon it's some kind of clamp - like a big version of one u'd find on a picture frame
OK - it's been seven days - I'll tell you what it is.
Chris was the closest - it is a clamp for holding lids on Fowler's preserving jars. Mum preserves all sorts of fruit etc in these jars, and this wonderful little gadget holds the lids down so the food doesn't go off!
